Sci Tech Field Trip to Time Warner Cable

On Saturday, February 16, ten of the girls from Sci Tech went on a field trip to Time Warner Cable. There, they learned how satellites transmit signals to earth (using Q-tips as the signals), how to translate those signals into a message (using multi-colored post-its), and how to send messages using binary codes. They also saw a model of how cable signals are sent to homes using lasers and mirrors. The field trip is part of the Connect a Million Minds initiative sponsored by Time Warner Cable.

Eighty percent of jobs created in the next decade will require math and science skills. We want to connect young people to hands-on learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math so they are prepared to solve the economic, environmental and community challenges of the future. In April 2009, Time Warner Cable announced its largest-ever charitable commitment of $100 million over five years to inspire students to pursue science and technology education and careers.
